During the Sino-American Expedition to Mt. Qomolangma in 1997, the Rongbuk Glacier was investigated and its terminus location was measured by means of GPS techniques. Comparison with 1966′s measurement yields that in the past 30 years the glacier has retreated 170~270 m, equivalent to a retreat speed of 5 5~8 7 m/a.
