【Abstract】 Guiyu is a major electronic waste(e-waste) recycling town in China.Various environmental harmful substances especially poisoning heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and chromium in soaring levels by primitive and uncontrolled e-waste recycling, which may lead to adverse birth outcomes. The aim of this study was to quantify prenatal exposure to lead, cadmium and chromium with increasing risk of adverse birth outcomes in Guiyu.A total of 289 neonates from Guiyu and 134 neonates from the neighboring town named Chaonan were selected for the measurement of lead, cadmium and chromium levels in their umbilical cord blood with Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry(GFAAS).In addition,a retrospective analysis on neonatal birth outcomes in Guiyu was performed.Birth record data were obtained from the hospitals for all registered births in an e-waste recycling town,Guiyu of Shantou,Guangdong province(Guiyu,n=3578) and Xiamen suburban areas of Fujian province, not related to e-waste (n=12384) from 2001 to 2007.Compared with Chaonan, neonates in Guiyu had significantly higher levels of lead, cadmium and chromium in the umbilical cord blood(P<0.01).The rates of preterm delivery, fetal death, twins and low birth weight in Guiyu group were all higher than those of Xiamen(P<0.01).This study provides evidence that combined exposure to lead, cadmium, and chromium from the primitive and unregulated e-waste processing increases the risk of adverse birth outcomes and adversely affects fetal health and development.
