【Abstract】 A binuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu2(μ-Cl)(Cl)2(L)2]ClO4 (L = N1, N3-bis(4-methoxylbenzyl)-diethylenetriamine) was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. It contains two kinds of crystallographically independent unique mono-μ-chloro-bridged Cu(II) dimers with C2 symmetry and similar structure. Each Cu(II) center has a distorted square pyramidal geometry. Multiple weak hydrogen bonds between the O atoms of ClO4ˉ and the CH groups of the polyamine moiety of L connect alternately two kinds of Cu(II) dimers to form a chain structure. The rarely observed ferromagnetic coupling via mono-μ-chloro bridge is found to be related to the unusual small Cu-Cl-Cu bridging angle and the structural distortion of two Cu(II) centers from square pyramid toward trigonal bipyramid.
