【Abstract】 It is considered that the development of tribology were gonethrough its initial stage and heyday from mid 1960’s to mid1980’s, and a slow erosion of tribology since late in the 1980’s.On basis of looking back on the growth of tribology, the back-ground of the emerging of industrial tribology is presented at first.Industrial tribology was appeared in the heyday of tribology. Lateron, it was also termed engineering tribology or applied tribology.Secondly, the reasons for the development of tribology being at alow tide and the challenges and opporiunities facing tribology areanalyzed. The more direct cause checked the development of tri-bology is possibly ignored the industrial application to a certainextent or is not satisfied the needs of industrial developments. Itis pointed out that there have emerged a number of new problems,which impinges on the work of tribologists, particularly the ener-gy, environment, health and safety, water and sustainability.However, challenges may also provide many opportunities as de-scribed in this paper. To deal with the present situation of the de-velopment of tribology in China, five ways are proposed by theauthor finally.更多还原
