【Abstract】 Two 15-d metabolism trials were conducted using a total of 32 crossbred barrows ([Yorkshire x Hampshire] x Duroc) weaned at 26 ±2 d of age and weighing 6.8±0.8 kg. The effect of the addition of 15 or 250 mg/kg Cu as CuSO4 · 5H2O to diets containing 0 or 5 % added animal fat on mineral digestibility and mineral contents in plasma and tissues in weanling pigs was investigated. In each trial, four groups of four littermate barrows were randomly assigned to one of four treatments in a randomized complete block design involving a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Pigs were individually kept in stainless steel metabolism crates in an environmentally controlled (27±2℃) room. The addition of 250 mg/kg Cu improved apparent digestibility of Cu (P<0.002) and Na (P<0.07), but had no effect (P>0.10) on apparent digestibility of Fe, Zn, Mn, Ca, Mg, P, and K. The addition of 5 % fat had no effect (P>0.10) on any of the mineral digestibility. There was no Cu x fat interaction (P>0.10) for any of the mineral digestibility. The addition of 250 mg/kg Cu to the diet increased Cu (P<0.001) in plasma, liver and kidney and decreased Fe in plasma (P<0.02) and liver (P<0.002). The addition of 5 % fat increased Fe in kidney (P<0.04) and heart (P<0.08). Copper X fat interactions were observed for spleen Ca (P<0.01), Mg (P<0.08), Na (P<0.02) and K (P<0.06), and spleen weight (P<0.02). Pigs fed the 15 mg/kg Cu plus 5 % fat diet had increased (P<0.05) spleen Ca and Na and spleen weight compared to pigs fed the 15 mg/kg Cu plus 0 fat diet, and pigs fed the 250 mg/kg Cu plus 5 % fat diet had decreased (P<0.05) spleen Ca and Na and spleen weight, and increased (P<0.07) spleen Mg and K. compared to pigs fed other diets. These results indicate that 250 mg/kg Cu affected the utilization of some minerals, and the Cu X fat interaction influenced spleen macromineral status and its weight in weanling pigs.
