【Abstract】 Verbal humor processing, which integrates both cognitive and affective aspects, has been shown to effectively regulate negative emotions. The cognitive aspect of verbal humor processing involves the comprehension of linguistic information, while the affective aspect relates to the elicitation of affective responses. While previous studies have examined the role of humor in emotion regulation, there is limited evidence regarding the cognitive-neural processing mechanisms of this regulation in individuals with subthreshold depression. In light of the three stages involved in verbal humor processing, namely incongruity detection, incongruity resolution, and mirth, this study aims to explore group differences in the neural mechanisms of the regulation of negative emotions by verbal humor between individuals with subthreshold depression and controls. The current study employed a 2×2 mixed design.Thirty-nine participants(the subthreshold depression group and the control group)provided two emotion ratings after exposure to negative priming words and regulating stimuli(the humorous condition and the neutral condition).Behavioral results demonstrated that the regulating stimuli enhanced emotional ratings, with the humorous condition eliciting significantly higher post-regulation ratings than the neutral condition, suggesting that verbal humor plays a significant role in regulating negative emotions. The ERP results revealed that activation of the N400 and LPP components was significantly enhanced during the humorous condition, reflecting the joint regulatory effect of cognitive and affective aspects in verbal humor processing on negative emotions.Compared to the control group, the subthreshold depression group exhibited overall less N400 activation in the right central region, indicating their reduced capacity for detecting incongruity. In the control group,no significant difference in LPP amplitude was observed in the right frontal region between humorous and neutral conditions, which suggests that LPP evoked by the humorous condition may have been attenuated or masked by LPP elicited by the negative priming words, providing neural evidence for the role of verbal humor in regulating negative emotions. The two groups showed no difference in LPP in the humorous condition in the right frontal region, suggesting that the role of verbal humor in regulating negative emotions functions similarly in both groups.Individuals with subthreshold depression exhibited stronger LPP in response to humorous stimuli compared to neutral stimuli, whereas no such differential response was observed in the control group. It further provides evidence that the regulation effect of verbal humor is more pronounced in the control group due to the negative emotional bias of subthreshold depression individuals.ERO results demonstrated the effect of depression inclination on the neural mechanisms of the regulation of negative emotions by verbal humor, showing that the subthreshold depression group exhibited greater activation in the theta and beta bands. The current study investigates the cognitive-neural processing mechanisms underlying the regulation of negative emotions by verbal humor, revealing different neural activity between controls and individuals with subthreshold depression.Adopting a neurolinguistic perspective, the study develops intervention strategies based on verbal humor for individuals with subthreshold depression, thereby expanding the potential applications of linguistic approaches in emotion regulation.
