【Abstract】 Meng Haoran is typically referred to as a’nature poet.’His landscape poetry typically consist of four five-character phrases, the majority of which represent his genuine emotions.Prior to the Ming dynasty, the majority of poetry reviewers pity Meng Haoran for his lifetime incapacity to become an official, and as a result, they generalize his poetic style with the label"Qing Jie,"just giving Meng Haoran’s poems very little consideration.Meng Haoran is known as the representative writer of the High-Tang period, and his rhythmic poems are regarded as the finest, according to Ming dynasty scholars. On the classicization of Meng Haoran’s poems during the Ming Dynasty, this paper is divided into two sections:a documentary research and a literary study. In the first chapter,we shall investigate the Ming Dynasty editions of Meng Haoran’s poems.Among the more than ten extant editions of Meng Haoran’s poetry, the Ming engraved versions are the most prevalent and have had the largest impact on modern editions. The nine extant Ming engraved editions of Meng Haoran’s poems differ greatly in the number of poems collected, the number of editions, the titles of the poems, and the bodies of the poems, and can be roughly divided into three systems:first, the Sichuan edition in the Song dynasty, the earliest edition that has been preserved;second,Liu Chenweng’s appraisal edition in the Yuan dynasty;and third, the anthology of poems by 12 poets in the Tang dynasty, published in the Ming dynasty.Although the editions of the first two systems stemmed from the previous generation, the Ming did not just reprint them;rather, they made numerous modifications, such as editing the words and phrases, modifying the sequence, and so on.The most important source for the later versions of Meng Haoran’s poems is a new system of editions based on the unification of several texts. The second through fourth chapters examine the Ming dynasty’s classical judgment of Meng Haoran’s poetry, the selection of classical works, and Meng Haoran’s involvement in establishing his position in the genealogy of Tang poetry.During the Ming era,Liu Chenweng’s comments on Meng Haoran’s poems circulated for a long time and were widely disseminated.Liu’s remarks altered the expectations of the Ming people. Many times during the early and middle Ming dynasties,Liu Chenweng’s appraisal edition was revised and reissued. The literati and publishers of the late Ming dynasty used the anthology of poems by 12 poets from the Tang dynasty to create new versions. One of the notable many editions is Li Mengyang’s appraisal edition. The assessment edition by Yuan Hongdao is a second option. The criticisms of both individuals were founded on that of Liu Chenweng.During this period, the number of Meng poems included in Tang poetry anthologies increased significantly in comparison to the preceding generation. These analyses and anthologies demonstrated the conflict of numerous viewpoints, and the sentence-by-sentence and chapter-by-chapter commentary prompted the Ming to delve more deeply into Meng Haoran’s poetry and affected the Qing and even modern readers of Meng’s poems. The critical history of Meng Haoran’s poems during the Ming dynasty developed a direct relationship between them and the general trend of conceptual poetic development at that time.Hence, the rise and fall of Meng’s poems in the system of poetic criticism can be viewed as a typical example of the significance of the Ming Dynasty in the formation of the status of classical poets throughout the classical Chinese period.
