【Abstract】 In1986, relevance theory is proposed in Relevance:Communication and Cognition coauthored by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson. Half a decade later, Ernst-August Gutt uses this theory to the field of translation for the first time. E. Gutt believes that a translation is ’telling what someone expressed in another language’(Ernst-August Gutt,2004:210). In his point of view, there’re two major methods of translating, i.e. direct translation and indirect translation. The former assures to convey’communicative clues’of the original correctly, and the later one means to express both explicature and implicature. Thus they take how to share literal meaning and contextual implication into consideration of the original text. Now that it is hoped with relevance theory, how to translate cultural context can be excellently explained.Hong Lou Meng, one of the most famous Chinese works, is filled with many branches of culture, such as poem, antique, furniture, medicine, etc. Research on the translation of Chinese classical cultural is vital, thus translation of Chinese medicine, one of branches of culture translation, is necessary as well. Not knowing Chinese traditional culture deeply, one is unable to translate this marvelous fiction well. The Story of the Stone, whose translator is David Hawkes, is one of the best-known. This thesis attempts to analyze the translation of disease treatment in The Story of the Stone from the perspective of relevance translation theory. The starting points of Chinese and western medicine differ from each other. Western medicine trends to use chemical medicine to fight against pathogenic factors, while Chinese medicine leans to use herbal medicine to balance yin and yang in body. Principles between the two are of great distinction, so are the other aspects, like therapies, drugs, etc. Thus faithfulness in translating process is not easy to achieve. David Hawkes tends to share all the implicatures of the original text; however, he neglects some of the explicatures. As a result, cultural default, which leads to communicative failure to some extent, turns up. In literary translation, such kind of things is frequent. In the thesis, typical cases are analyzed. As for the excellent parts, they can be examples for the other translators to follow. And the parts that are not very satisfactory should be realized as well. The whole thesis purports to give some inspirations to translators.
