【摘要】 随着改革开放的不断深入以及城市国际化进程的日渐加快,城市信息导向系统的作用日益突出,作为信息导向系统中重要组成部分的公示语也越来越多地被翻译成英文,城市国际语言环境得到了明显改善。但是,在许多国际化程度较高的中心城市和旅游目的地,公示语误译现象比比皆是。误译使得公示语失去其原有功能,给在华外国友人造成极大不便。与此同时,公示语译文是我国对外宣传翻译的重要组成部分,而外宣翻译是一个国家人文环境建设和对外交流水平的具体体现,错误百出的公示语译文严重影响了中国的国际形象。迄今为止,学术界对公示语的研究大多停留在微观层面上的数据收集和纠错阶段,从宏观高度上用一个可行的理论系统地指导公示语翻译的研究尚不多见。本研究以功能翻译理论为指导,研究汉语公示语的英译。一方面,作为信息导向系统重要组成部分的文字信息,公示语在翻译中强调突出其核心意义及其功能,略去次要信息。另一方面,功能翻译理论是以目的法则为主导的理论体系,以目的语文本及其所在的目的语文化为导向,强调译文预期功能的实现。因此,功能翻译理论可作为指导公示语翻译的理想理论。在对大量公示语实例的分析基础上,本研究从功能派的代表理论入手,阐述了该理论在公示语翻译上的应用,认为译者可以采取灵活有效的翻译策略以期产生具备交际功能、符合预期目的的公示语译文。在功能翻译理论的指导下,本研究提出了公示语翻译的一些策略,如替代法,借用法,拼音法,直译法,重组法和欠额法。本研究对于翻译理论和实践均具有一定的积极意义。在理论方面,它证明了运用功能翻译理论指导和分析公示语翻译是可行的。在实践方面,它为公示语的汉英翻译提出了可行的翻译策略,为改进和完善城市国际语言环境做出了贡献。更多还原

【Abstract】 Since the reform and opening-up three decades ago, China has developed close ties with other countries around the world. With more and more foreigners streaming into the country, many large cities throughout the country have had their public signs translated into English to facilitate foreigners’stay. However, the current situation of sign translation in China is far from being satisfactory. Errors are prevalent in the English versions of public signs. The poor English translations have failed to meet their purpose. Moreover, the loopy English translations are believed to tarnish China’s image on the international stage.Past studies on Chinese-English (C-E) translation of public signs focus primarily on sorting out errors and coming up with specific skills to correct them. Greater efforts are needed to seek a feasible theoretical approach to the translation of public signs.The thesis probes into C-E translation of public signs in light of functionalist translation theory. The purpose of translating Chinese public signs into English is to make foreigners understand and accept the information the public signs carry. What functionalist theory emphasizes is just the achievement of intended function of the target text in the target culture. Therefore, functionalist translation theory can serve as an ideal theoretical guidance to C-E translation of public signs.The thesis is based on the analysis of abundant examples of public signs. It attempts to apply functionalist translation theory to C-E translation of public signs. In light of functionalist translation theory, translators are expected to select translation strategies flexibly to ensure the achievement of intended functions of public signs. With the functionalist approaches as the overall guidance, the thesis puts forward such translation strategies as substituting, borrowing, use of pinyin, literal translation, restructuring and under-translation.The thesis is significant in both theoretical and practical aspects. Theoretically, it proves that it is feasible to apply functionalist theory to C-E translation of public signs. Practically, it puts forward some translation strategies to improve the English language environment in China.更多还原
