【Abstract】 The meaning of architecture emerges as we experience the interactions betweenourselves and other people.Threaded by the key words“transit behavior”,“perception”, and“experience”,this study attempts to integrate the behavioral characteristics of tourists’transit insidethe tourists’reception center of a scenic area and their psychological needs in termsof travel as the basis for the spatial organization and construction of the architectureof the center. The experience and perception of architecture depends on the placewhere“events”happen, the circulation space, which is the instrument via whichpeople participate in and experience architecture, which represents the structure howvarious functional spaces are connected as well as their logical relationships, andwhich is the setting that people encounter most frequently and which bears, however, the least clarity of implication. Therefore, paying attention to the experience of andperception toward transit space may to some extent weaken the external meaningsexpected to be conveyed by the center as a visual focus and tend to becomeexpression of sensible experiences. The carrying capacity of the tourists’reception center, which is the transit hub ofexternal traffic and visitors of a scenic area, should respond primarily to the quantityof visitors and traffic of the peak era, and it also needs to address the internal andexternal spatial scales as well as the rational configuration of the functions. Rationalorganization of the circulation of the external space of the transit centre should bebased on factors such as the site condition, the characteristics of the pedestriangroups, and the marginal property of the site, and special attention should be paid tothe interface, landscaping of the pedestrian plaza in humanistic way. On the otherhand, the internal space of the center should be considered from psychological andbehavioral perspectives to achieve efficient, comfort, and convenient transit besidesutilizing the continuity and dimensionality of the space. What is more important is toexplore how to cater to tourists’need of diverse and maximized experience in transit.Accordingly, this study proposes a series of design strategies in terms of variousspecial elements. Moreover, tourist reception centre usually is located at the place where theinterface of the adjacent heterogeneous spaces of the inside and the outside of the scenic area lies. Therefore, it can help to fuse these adjacent spaces without losingtheir individual characters, thus acting as a half-porous membrane that can control theflow of energy between heterogeneous areas and that bear the spatial quality ofmeeting people’s various needs. On the other hand, the centre may integrate theheterogeneous landscapes of the natural and the built and create the unifiedenvironmental quality of“nature-space-human”.
