【Abstract】 Poetry is a special genre of literature—a kind of perfect combination of both formal and spiritual beauty. It is said that Chinese classical poetry is the essence of Chinese language. And using reduplicated words is a notable figure of speech in it, which can obviously be seen in the earliest poetry anthology The Book of Poetry. Chinese early poems were mostly formed by repetitions and reduplicated words, because these poems were written in an early stage of the formation of Chinese literature language which was not mature at that time. This situation is like that when babies begin to leam to speak. They are always capable of using reduplicated words, such as "papa, mama" and so on.It is difficult to translate poems, especially those with reduplicated words. As an important component of Chinese classical poetry, reduplicated words draw a great deal of attention of linguistics. And with the rapid development of cultural exchanges, the translation relating to reduplicated words is of great importance. Relying on passions to Chinese classical poems, the author has done researches on translations relating to them. Therefore, based on examples in The Book of Poetry and other Chinese classical poems, this thesis focuses on how to translate RWCCP (reduplicated words in Chinese classical poetry) into English from the aesthetic perspective. The author wishes her thesis would make at least some contribution to translation studies and practices.Translation researches have witnessed a long history both at home and abroad. Owing to years of hard work, translation studies have been developed into a trans-disciplinary subject. Translation aesthetics theory is of great significance, for it is practical in many translation areas, especially in poetry translation. In Chapter 1, the author has done a research on translation theories both at home and abroad in retrospect, and analyzed the aesthetic complex of traditional Chinese translation norms. She also introduces several categories of translation aesthetics. Since most definitions of translation are simple descriptions, the author ventures to point out that the nature of translation is to seek truth and beauty for the purpose of making the aim of translation more direct and definite and of stimulating the translators’ aesthetic consciousness. From this perspective, and on the basis of Liu Miqing’s theory - three levels of translation, the author believes that criteria of poetry translation should achieve semantic and aesthetic value, in other words, to reach the semantic level and aesthetic level which demonstrates that the nature of translation is seeking beauty and truth. In Chapter 2, the author has made a comparative survey on both forms and rhetoric effects of reduplicated words in Chinese classical poetry and rhetorical repetitions in English poems. She also categorizes them from different viewpoints. Though there are great differences between Chinese and English, they have the similar figures of speech. So the author considers that RWCCP could be translated into forms of English rhetorical repetitions, which is the main content of the third .chapter, the main body of-this thesis. With. case studies in this chapter, the author has probed into several methods in translating RWCCP of different categories. However, occasionally it is still hard for translators to bring about the desired effect in the above-mentioned three ways. So there is another translation method to choose, namely translating RWCCP into English repetitions at the beginning or at the end of a verse. In doing so, the author thinks it could present part of the reduplicated characteristics, though the form is not as compact as pure reduplicated words. However, there are many reduplicated words which could not be translated into English rhetorical repetitions in that there are too many differences between the two languages and that Chinese is so complicated. Thus English versions can hardly realize the original formal effect and thus a major goal of translation, then, is to achieve the spiritual resemblance.
