"AI Slop" and Algorithmic Feeding: AI-Driven Content Alienation and the Aesthetic Degradation of the Communication Ecology
【Abstract】 As a cultural symptom of 2025, "slop" was selected as the Merriam-Webster Word of the Year, signifying a deep pathological shift in the communication ecology of the AI era from a "content value–oriented" logic to a "traffic-filling–oriented" one. Examined from the perspectives of the political economy of communication and intertextual theory, this phenomenon reveals that "slop" is not merely low-quality content mass-produced by AI, but a structural product of the collusion among algorithmic technological preferences, platform capitalist logics, and audiences’ aesthetic inertia. This mechanism leads to the aesthetic downgrading of the communication ecology, "garbage suffocation" in the information domain, and a crisis of de-creativization in the domain of cultural production, giving rise to global technological anxiety and cultural fragmentation. Only by reconstructing a symbiotic relationship between technology and humanity through digital humanism can a communicative ecological civilization that integrates aesthetic value with public significance be rebuilt in the AI era.
