【Abstract】 As a foundational classic of Chinese civilization, Shangshu is revered as the “ancestor of political texts” and the “source of historical records”, embodying rich political philosophy, historical narratives, and cultural ethos. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, it has drawn significant attention from Western missionaries and sinologists, opening a new chapter in cross-cultural dialogue between China and the West. The first complete English translation of Shangshu, published in the mid-19th century by Walter Henry Medhurst, represents a pivotal moment in the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange. This translation extensively consulted Chinese textual sources and integrated Confucian exegesis with historical narrative in its translation strategies, profoundly shaping Western academic understanding of ancient Chinese civilization. This study, grounded in the perspectives of classical Chinese philology and translation communication studies, delves into the translator’s background, the motivations for the translation, its textual foundations, and its characteristics of “textual interpretation”.It systematically examines the translation’s dissemination and reception in the English-speaking world, aiming to illuminate the impact of early practices in translating Chinese classics on Sino-Western cultural exchange.更多还原
