An Analysis of Indian Immigrants in Colonial Tanzania
【Abstract】 After centuries of operation and survival, the Indian community has been deeply integrated into the national family of Tanzania, and has had a profound influence on the course of Tanzania’s historical development. The Indian diaspora used to be viewed as “intermediaries” by local and Chinese scholars, but this perception is more based on a racist perspective of colonial times or a nationalist perspective of African countries after independence. A peek inside the Indian diaspora shows that these immigrants have duplicated the complex social composition of India, their original homeland, in accordance with the principles of religious sects and castes, thus forming a mosaic of sub-groups across East Africa. The diverse Indian community has positively influenced the social changes in Tanzania in terms of social culture, economy and politics, and is an important part of the social and historical development process of Tanzania.
