【Abstract】 Persons with disabilities are particularly disadvantaged because of the socio-economic consequences of COVID-19 and measures to control the pandemic. Whether and how media outlets represent persons with disabilities in the pandemic are not only related to the visibility of them in the public sphere, but also an important entry point for surveying the relationship between public health crisis and marginalized groups. Through the content analysis of the news coverages of persons with disabilities affected by COVID-19 released by 23 Chinese mainstream online media, our study finds that: Persons with disabilities affected by COVID-19 were depicted in a neutral to positive tone, with both their vulnerability and resilience represented. However, persons with disabilities were severely underrepresented in an unbalanced way. These news coverages lack the perspective of disability rights but abound in stereotypes, and have implicit discriminations. Overall, mainstream online media constructed persons with disabilities affected by COVID-19 as the others under the perspective of ableism. Therefore, this paper suggests that we should reflect deeply on the impact of COVID-19 on persons with disabilities, and optimize the representation strategies of mainstream online media in an allround and multi-angle manner.
