The Rewriting of the Androgyny Myth and the Postmodern Ethics in the Narrative
【Abstract】 The contemporary British writer Jeanette Winterson in her novel The PowerBook rewrites the traditional myth of Androgyny in an equation of 1+1=1, creating a new form of Androgyny with postmodern ethics in an equation of 1+1=4. In the narrative of the novel, the structural relationship between reality and imagination, the temporal relationship between the present and history, the spatial and cultural relationship between the indigenous and the exotic, and the character relationship between the lover and the beloved all demonstrate a kind of intersection, juxtaposition and coexistence, forming a metaphorical Androgyny. But within each "Androgyny", the relationship between "the male" and "the female" is that of self and other, irreducible and refusing to be the same, thus forming a narrative metaphor of Androgyny with postmodern ethics. This narrative form implies Winterson’s reflection on the ethics of exceeding the self and facing the other.
