Literature and Morality in Rorty’s View of Post-philosophical Culture
【Abstract】 Richard Rorty, who inherits the thoughts of Classical Pragmatism and regards morality as an important issue of philosophical thinking, opposes the traditional moral concept based on the eternal universal rational principle, believing that moral principles depend on the agreements and practices reached by different human communities, and that moral progress lies in better emotional response to more and more people and things. By exploring the literary factors in philosophy, Rorty makes philosophy a certain type of literature, expands the scope of literature, and promotes the position of literature in culture. "Post-philosophical culture" is therefore also called "literature culture". In Rorty’s view, literature, especially fiction, can satisfy both the pursuit of self-creation at the private level and the pursuit of moral unity at the public level. Literature realizes self-creation and public unity through imagination and empathy.
