The Influence of Mate Decision Makers’ Gender and the Characteristics of Role Models on Mate Choice Copying
【Abstract】 The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of mate decision makers’ gender and the characteristics of role models(gender, the evaluation level, and the quantity) on mate choice copying of college students. Through behavioral experiments, study 1 found that the gender of the subjects and the evaluation level of opposite sex models jointly affected mate choice copying, and the different evaluation levels of opposite sex models had different effects on mate choice copying for female college students. High-level model evaluation showed the greatest effect of mate choice copying, followed by moderate-level model evaluation; low-level model evaluation showed the smallest effect. Study 2 manipulated the number of role models and found that both male and female college students preferred potential opposite sex targets favored by a large number of role models. When the number of role models was few or there were no role models, it had a negative impact on female college students’ mate choice copying.
