The Effect of Abnormal Sensory Response on Sleep Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
【Abstract】 This study aims to explore the relationship between the abnormal sensory response and sleep problems among children with autism spectrum disorders(ASD),by testing the parents of 176 ASD children aged 2-17 with the Short Sensory Profile(SSP) and the Children ’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire(CSHQ).The results show the following:(1) The autistic children ased 2-5,6-11,and 12-17 showed abnormal sensory responses, accounting for 84.6%,74.3%,and 70.0%,respectively;also,they showed sleep problems, accounting for 92.3%,90.0%,and 85.0%,respectively;(2) on the whole, there were significant correlations between their abnormal sensory response and sleep problems;and(3) with the demographic variables controlled, their abnormal sensory response could help significantly predict their sleep problems. The study concludes that the abnormal sensory response is prevalent in children with ASD and closely associated with their sleep problems, and that it is necessary to highlight interventions in their abnormal sensory response so as to improve their sleep.
