【Abstract】 The paper sets out to contrast the stylistic(in-)consistency between the fi rst 24 and the last 32 chapters of Joly’s English version of Hong Lou Meng(or Dream of the Red Chamber) from the dimensions of poetic prosody, sentence pattern(including the total number, average length and Chinese-English correspondence) and contextual appropriateness(including renderings for reporting verbs and endearing terms). By further justification from cross-reference on the same dimensions with Joly’s counterparts, i.e., three other English versions of the same Chinese novel, it is found that the beginning chapters of Joly’s translation differ conspicuously from the latter chapters. The paper then makes tentative explanations for the possible reasons behind the difference of the translator style of Joly’s version.更多还原
