【Abstract】 Cities came into being when the human society developed to a certain level. The rise and development of cities is a double-edged sword,which brings to humans not only blessings but disasters to some extent. The striking feature of Lewis Mumford’s views of Urban Civilized History is that the urban development has both positive and negative effects on human life. In his masterpiece The City in History: Its Origins,Its Transformations,and Its Prospects,the author reviews,with his extensive knowledge and insightful vision,the history of global cities,especially the western ones,and analyses both the positive and negative effects of cities on the history of human civilization. In the analysis of some specific cases of urban history,this paper first aims to review Lewis Mumford’s summary of and reflection on the dual nature of urban civilization,and then probes into the practical significance of his book for contemporary urban planning and construction.更多还原
