【Abstract】 "An Experiment with Misery" is a news sketch written by Stephen Crane in 1894.It records,from the third-person point of view,the male’s existence in the American masculinity crisis through a youth’s gaze.The youth,a representative of the American middle class,is described as a gazing subject,while the tramps’ bodies the gazed object.In its display of the middle class’s gaze of different types of bodies of the underclass,grotesque body,natural body and social body,the sketch not only represents the transgression of masculinities across different classes,but also clarifies the influence of class disparities on gender hierarchies.This implies Crane’s reflection on the dominant ideology about American middle-class masculinity in the 1890s.更多还原
