【Abstract】 This paper attempts to complementarily apply mental space theory and relevance theory to explore the cognitive process of understanding deliberate ambivalent utterances.Mental space theory can efficiently demonstrate the constructional process of illocutionary forces of deliberate ambivalence.However,relevance theory may contribute to the optimal relevant interpretation of the illocutionary forces.By making pragmatic inferences,hearers are capable of understanding the communicative intention that deliberate ambivalent utterances convey so that communication may run smoothly.更多还原
