【Abstract】 The natural environment in west Hainan is fragile, which is characterized by its tropical conditions. Urbanization has brought changes to the ambient areas of towns. On the basis of the topography maps of the 1930s, 1950s and 1970s and the TM images and relevant information, the changes of land use around Basuo Town before and after its formation are analyzed. Land use has changed greatly from 1930s to 1970s and some new types of land use emerged, such as urban land, industry zone, and traffic zone. A lot of dry farmland has been changed into paddy field. But at the same time, land degradation has also occurred. Desertification area increased greatly in the 1950s, and then decreased. Urbanization obviously influences the land use in surrounding areas; the nearer they are to the city, the stronger they are influenced. The factors that make the land use change include the building of town, the increase of population, the construction of shelter-forest and irrigation works and so on.更多还原
