【Abstract】 In The Scarlet Letter, good and evil of humanity and moral criterion will be discussed in this thesis through analyzing and appraising the four leading characters.Chillingworth, Dimmesdale, Hester Prynne and Pearl, their souls experienced a process of degeneration and penitence and at last they come to see their errors and reach the spiritual consciousness.The concept The Scarlet Letter expresses exceeds the traditional concept that good and evil are completely opposite in people’s characteristics. The various human behaviour and psychology can’t be generalized by using the appraisal standards-good and evil. At the same time, they have historical limitation in themselves.
