【Abstract】 In modern American literature,which is a mirror of Ameican social life,there are many such figures:either unable to adapt themselves to nor accept the ugliness of the modern civilization,or because of the conservativeness and foolishness of their surroundings,they cannot communicate with others or the society,they are spiritually isolated and feel very lonely,solitary and empty minded.From small towns to big cities,from ordinary people to intellectuals,they form a typical group of the lonely people,which makes modern American literature full of pessimism.更多还原
