【Abstract】 How to carry out a complex development and utilization of the common space above and under the urban road is an important problem to be considered during modernization of the city. The experience in modernization of the city in developed countries shows that complex utilization of the urban road space, especially the underground space of urban road and to construct a common trench for various life pipelines is an effective way for utilization of urban road space. In this paper, the experience in Japan on joint development of common trench with urban road is introduced briefly and the classification, planning, design and construction of common trench in Japan are described in detail.
