【Abstract】 Traditional grammars have made some prescriptive distinctions between "_ing" and "to_infinitive" forms. Nevertheless they only generalize some rules from the language phenomena without revealing the operating regularities from the aspect of semantic features. This thesis attempts to use the theory of the great modern English grammarians Quirk and Leech to study the semantic characteristic and pragmatic function of the two forms from the angle of cognition through contrast and comparison. The purpose of the author is to expose the connotations and the essential regularities of the two forms and make a clear distinction between the different meanings expressed by the two forms in order to facilitate a further and systematic study of the nonfinite verbs.更多还原
