【Abstract】 The paper offers a pragmatic explanation for the word order of the construction of"noun+ numeral-classifier"in Modern Chinese.The numeral-classifier phrase usually precedes the noun that it modifies.However,there are some cases in which the phrase follows the noun.The pres- ence of the order of"noun+numeral-classifier"is due to the fact that the speaker wants the nu- meral-classifier phrase to be the focus.This order is not base-generated but a result of transforma- tion.In some cases the order of"noun+numeral-classifier"reflects iconicity.It is concluded that the presence of the irregular word order is mainly pragmatically motivated.更多还原
