【Abstract】 The destructive earthquake occurred in Nantou, Taiwan, on September 21, 1999, caused heavy losses in life and property, 2295 people died, 4139 people injured, 9 billion to hundreds billion US dollars economic losses were caused by this earthquake. This paper outlines the conditions of the quake, including parameters, damage and casualties, disaster relief, background of occurrence as well as effect of the quake on society and economy. The article also gives a brief introduction of the earthquake research and observation works, major research institutions, and new study programs in Taiwan.更多还原
