【Abstract】 Ship mortgage lending is the commonest way used for ship fi nance because a mortgage provides a real security for the outstand ing loan without prejudice to the mortgagor’s freedom to make full use of the mortgaged ship. However, the mortgage is itself exposed to some uncertain risks, which makes the mortgagee still bear the risks of not being repaid. Consequently, further protection for ship finance is needed. Insurance is, to some extent, the best and final protection for ship finance. This article analyses various ways of effecting insurance to pr0tect ship finance and points out the problemsto be n0ted by, mortgagees while effecting insurance for the mortgaged ship.
