【Abstract】 The author classifies the water masses in the upper part of the North Equatorial Counter CurrentTrough area(8°N section)of the western tropical Pacific Ocean with a fuzzy clustering method,anddescribes the variations of the water mass features and distribution and their responses to the El Ni(?)oand anti-El Ni(?)o Events occurred in 1986～1989,basing on the CTD data obtained in the USA-PRCJoint TOGA Program from 1986 to 1990.The results have shown that there are four water masses,i.e.North Pacific Tropical Surface Water,North Pacific Subsurface Water,North Pacific Intermedi-ate Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water(called NPTSW,NPSW,NPIW and AAIW in short re-spectively)in the studied area shallower than 1 000m;their joint boundaries are at 75,200 and 310mor so,respectively.In the early El Ni(?)o Event occurred in 1986～1987,the thermocline moved upby 15m,the salinity in the well-mixed surface layer decreased by about 0.35 and the temperaturenear the sea surface increased a little.In the flourishing anti-El Ni(?)o Event occurred in 1988～1989,the thermocline moved down by 17m,the salinity in the well-mixed surface layer decreased by about0.35 and the temperature near the sea surface increased a little.更多还原
