【Abstract】 The anaerobic threshold (AT) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) are both important physiological foundation of the aerobic capacity for athletes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cross-country skiers’ aerobic capacity comprehensively and to provide useful information for selecting and training skiers by using the AT and VO2max. The results showed that there were significant differences between men’s VO2max (4.4L/min, 69.09 ml/kg. min and VO2AT (2.89 L/min) and women’s (3.071/min, 55.33 ml/min for VO2max and 2.03 L/min for VO2AT, respectively) (p<0.01), but there were no significant sexual difference between men’s and women’sAT(%VOmax). The AT and VO2max of elite Chinese skiers were 68.17% (%VO2max) and 5.03L/min (74 .65ml/kg/min) for men and 66.86% (%VO2max) and 3.42L/min (60.53 ml/kg/min) for women, which weresignificantly higher than the other skiers’ (p<0.01). The analysis indicated that cross-country skiing is an endurance event, required rather higher 2max),because the VO2max of cross-country skiers’ were higher than that of athletes of other events and the AT ofChinese elite crosscountry skiers was lower than that of endurance athletes from other countries, inspite ofthe VO2max being similar. It was therefore suggessted that improvement of Chinese crosscountry skiers’%VO2max should be considered emphatically in the training. It was also suggested that the AT and VO2max should be considered comprehensively in the selection ofalthletes due to their difference in trainability.
