【Abstract】 Studies have been made on ganglion cells of the retina of the pond frog (Rana nigromaculata) with the aid of Quantimet 720 image analysis computer.1.Counting of ganglion cells in the retina441 visual fields were sampled in the whole retina and the number of ganglion cells per square millimetre in each visual field was calculated.The total number of ganglion cells in the retina was estimated to be close to 630,000.2.Density and distribution of ganglion cells of the retinaThe density of ganglion cells were divided into four classes (see Pig.2).The iso-density map was ploted according to the four different density.The iso-density map showed that a horizontal higher density area of the ganglion cells extended from the central area to both temporal and nosal regions.In this horizontal higher density area,there was a maximal density area of ganglion cells,it was located dorsal and temporal side of the optic disc.That is the central area.The further away from the central area the lower is the density of the ganglion cells.The density of ganglion cells in the central area is about 16,000/mm2,and m the periphery about 5,000-7,000/mm23.The size of ganglion cellsThe total number of ganglion cells was counted in one visual field of the central retina and another one in the periphery.The diameter of each cell in this visual field was measured by Quantimet 720.The ganglion cells fell into three groups according to its diameter: small cells (diameter <10μm),middle cells (diameter 10-20μm),and large cells (diameter >20μm).The proportion in size of the three groups in the central area is as follows: small cells,83.9%;middle cells,16.1%;and cells larger than 20μm was not found in this area.In the periphery,the small cells were 75.9%,middle cells 22.6% and large cells 1.5%.The size of the retina and the thickness of each layer of the retina were measured.The distribution of blood vessels were also described.更多还原
