Taking near 10 years domestic and foreign publication's literature as the basis,this article has carried on the total outline to the biological characteristics of Cistanche and its distribution.In particular,the chemical composition and the pharmacological effects of major chemical constituents were reviewed,and look forward to its prospects for development.

肉苁蓉(Herba C istanche)是列当科(Oroban-chaceae)肉苁蓉属(C istanche)植物肉苁蓉干燥带鳞叶的肉质茎,又名地精、金笋、苁蓉、大芸。始载于《神农本草经》,列为上品,其后古典《本草经疏》、《本草汇言》、《月华子本草》等多有记载。李时珍曰:“此物补而不峻,故有从容之兮”
