The theory of fault diagnosis is summarized. Firstly, the b ackground of the problem and development survey of fault diagnosis are reviewed. Then, several different approaches to the problems are analyzed. And applicati on of neural network to fault diagnosis is introduced. Finally, further research directions of fault diagnosis are pointed out.
