Aimed at the automatic color segmentation of topographic maps, a new effective fuzzy clustering algorithm is presented. The color space of the map image is transformed firstly and as a result the kurtosis of the histogram is more apparent. FCM algorithm is reformed by fuzzy restraint and applied in two dimensions space afterward. The question of automatic color segmentation of topographic maps is resolved at last. The algorithm has been implemented on computer and a good result has been obtainned.
