Using anthers from three lines of rice and combinations of intervatietal crosses between indica and japonica,the biochemical causes of male sterility were investigated.It was found that contents of soluble protons in anthers from sterile line,highly and Jowly sterile intervarietal hybrids were reduced to-35-40%,55% and 70% of those of their normal parents respectively.Starch content was markedly reduced also.In sterile anthers,activities of ATP ase and phosphorylase were suppressed to one third and one four...
