A part of the hairy root-inducing Ri plasmid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes known as T-DNAtransfers the infected plant cell and becomes intergrated with its genomic DNA, and bringshairy root. As compared with normal cell culture, the hairy root culture system is characterizedby high growth rate, free-hormone, genetic stability and production of the higher levels ofsecondary metabolites, which is a perfect cell culture system for production of secondarymetabolites.
