Cervical syndrome and Na~+-K~+-ATPase activity in cervical vertebra muscular tissue
【Abstract】 OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between Na+-K+-ATPase activity in cervical vertebra muscular tissue and cervical syndrome. DATA SOURCES: A computer-based online search of PubMed database was undertaken to identify the articles about the relationship between skeletal muscle injury and Na+-K+-ATPase of the muscular tissues published in English between January 1988 and December 2004 with the keywords of "Na+-K+ pump, Na+-K+-ATPase, muscle". Meanwhile, we searched CNKI for the articles about the relationship between Na+-K+-ATPase and muscle injury, and the pathogenesis of cervical syndrome published in Chinese between January 1990 and December 2005 with the keywords of "Na+-K+-ATPase, skeletal muscle, the etiological factor of cervical syndrome" in Chinese. STUDY SELECTION: After the first check, the articles about the relationship between Na+-K+-ATPase and muscle injury were selected, then the full texts were looked up. Inclusive criteria: Articles about the close relationship between Na+-K+-ATPase activity and skeletal muscle injury. Exclusive criteria: Repetitive researches and Meta analysis articles. DATA EXTRACTION: 939 articles about the relationship between Na+-K+-ATPase and muscle injury were collected, and 20 articles were accorded with the research criteria. DATA SYNTHESIS: Many researches indicate that Na+ and K+ are closely related to muscular excitation, contraction and fatigue, and Na+-K+-ATPase acts as a kind of essential giant molecule protein that is to say the activities of skeletal muscle are dependent on Na+-K+-ATPase, and Na+-K+-ATPase activity changes and skeletal muscle injury are interactive. As one of the risk factors of cervical syndrome, the position of compulsive bowing head can reduce Na+-K+-ATPase activity, which could damage the muscle cells, and lead to the onset of cervical syndrome. CONCLUSION: The research about the effect of traditional Chinese medicine on treating cervical syndrome according to the muscular enzyme activity changes is seldom, so it needs further study to display the ascendancy of traditional Chinese medicine in curing cervical syndrome and other related diseases.
