【Abstract】 James Joyce’s short novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man depicts the staging process of Stephen Deadulous’ development toward an artist.All through this narrative process,Joyce employed many modernistic approaches such as flashback,juxtaposition,the omission of the connecting narrative parts and the fragmented narration to make the novel an innovated form of "buildunsroman".However,when we take a closer look at the text itself,we can still discover some modes of relatively static patterns from under this renovating "anti-novel".These modes of patterns not only provide Stephen with ways of interacting with the outside world and ways of identifying the self,but provide Joyce himself with effective narrative patterns in presenting the development of Stephen’s artistic mentality.Therefore,this article will help the readers to recognize Stephen’s artistic growth through the analysis of three narrative patterns,from the most controllable pattern on the part of Stephen—the subjective vs.the objective pattern,to the less controllable one—the chiastic pattern,to the least controllable one—the psychological pattern.更多还原
