【Abstract】 A fountainhead of the 20th century Western literary theories, the Anglo-American "New Criticism" has exerted an immeasurable influence upon all the later schools of literary criticism. It stresses the organicity of the literary work and focuses on "intrinsic criticism" instead of "extrinsic criticism". Apart from its great contributions to the study of poetry, it has a fairly solid theory of short story, which is represented by C. Brooks and R. P. Warren’s achievements in this field, but which has remained unnoticed. This thesis aims, through a meticulous study of this theory of short story, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the New Criticism and draw more academic attention to the importance and relevance in today’s context of "intrinsic criticism" as advocated and exemplified by the new critics.更多还原
