【Abstract】 Introducing W.E.B.Du Bois and the concept of double-consciousness he interpreted,this paper illustrates the reasons why Black Americans suffered the inward ambivalence and interior dilemma.The term "double-consciousness" drawn on by Du Bois was mainly from two main sources — European Romanticism and American Transcendentalism.The connotation of double-consciousness is discussed in both the figurative and symbolic senses.The paper points out that the "double-consciousness" revealed not only the two-ness of African America but also the dilemma of Black writers.It illustrates the reasons why sustaining tension of assimilation and separation lasted long in the African American literature.The continuing influence of Du Bois’s works suggest the extent to which he succeeded.更多还原
