【Abstract】 The Republic of China inherited the gambling scourge of the late Qing period.The political,economic,cultural and social fashions in the Guangdong society in the transition period provided new and special social background for gambling.The whole society was then fragmented and out of control and succeeding governments varied in their determination and efforts to ban gambling.
