【Abstract】 This essay makes a brief introduction to the heated discussion in China in recent years on the arbitrariness of linguistic signs and tries to make a comparatively comprehensive review and analysis.The author holds the view that it is the peculiarity of Chinese language that may overthrow Saussure’s hypothesis on the essence of linguistic signs;the arbitrary theory is more fit for Indo-European which is characterized in phoneticized languages;the inconsistency between word structure and pronunciation in Chinese language makes the relation between significant and signifier more complex,and Chinese language shows more iconicity instead of arbitrariness.更多还原
