【Abstract】 With the semantic analysis of understatement, this paper aims to discuss how relevent theory can be employed to interpret the working mechanism of understatement. The conclusion is: understatement is one of the particularized conversational implicature, which treats context as its frame, the gradable contrast, relational contrast and hyponymy as its semantic features.
