Relationship between Vascular Cognitive Impairment and oxidative injuries
【Abstract】 Objective: To explore the characteristics of free radical metabolism, nitric oxide and nitric oxide synthase in vascular cognitive impairment. Methods: The levels of superoxide dismudase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) of blood serum were determined in 45 patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and 26 normal aged controls. Results: When compared with controls, SOD, NO and NOS were lower and MDA higher significantly in VCI patients (P<0.01). More importantly, the levels of NO were positively correlated to the scores of MMSE (r=0.574, P<0.01). Conclusions: the injury of free radicals and the decrease in protective anti-oxidation enzyme system possibly played important roles in the development of VCI. NO may be involved in VCI development.
