Relationship between the dominant linguistic hemisphere and handness in 269 aged Chinese
【Abstract】 Objective To study the relationship between hand ness and dominant Linguistic hemisphere in aged Chinese. Methods Aphasia examinations were performed in 269 patients with unilateral cerebral lesions included language related regions confirmed by CT scans. Results There were 132 aphasics among 162 cases with left cerebral lesions and 14 aphasics among 107 cases with right cerebral lesions. Of right handed patients, there were 124 aphasics among 150 cases with left cerebral lesions and 12 aphasics among 99 cases with right cerebral lesions. Of non right handed patients, there were 8 aphasics among 12 cases with left lesions and 2 aphasics among 8 cases with right lesions. Of 123 patients without aphasia, 29 cases that relapsed stroke with contra lateral cerebral lesions evolved aphasia. Conclusions Left or right hemisphere in Chinese probably control language. In right handed Chinese the dominant language hemisphere is mostly on the left and is seldom on the right. In non right handed Chinese the dominant language hemisphere is also mostly on the left. There is no evidence of double control of both hemispheres.
