The concept of coherence in linguistics originates from the study of rhetoric. It has become a focal problem in discourse analysis in the recent two decades. It is claimed in this article that discourse coherence enjoys in nature the dichotomy between overtness and covertness, objectivity and subjectivity, and determinacy and non-determinacy. One typical approach to coherence is the cognitive perspective, and the other two are the linguistic-formal and pragmatic perspectives.
