Literary canon and short story
【Abstract】 The English short story arose as a modern literary genre in the early years of the nineteenth century. But it has been marginalized by Western mainstream literature for a considerable time. The present paper analyzes in general terms the negative impact caused by the hierarchy of genres in the literary canon on the tortuous development of the short story genre, taking the origin of the short story in English literary history as an example, examines the writers’ reputation in relation to the state of the short story genre, and illuminates the fact that among the various elements which are responsible for the marginalized state of the short story, the traditional literary canon is one of the decisive factors. The paper finally points out that in the new century, the literary canon should be opened to expand the scope of discussion and creation. Through opening up "the closed canon", literature will always develop in an ongoing process.
